As more people become aware of the cruelty behind every down pillow and comforter, they’re choosing high-quality synthetic options instead. And hotels are now offering down-free bedding to align with visitors’ humane values. Dream Hotel Group—which owns 19 luxury hotels internationally—is one of the many companies that have stopped ordering down bedding.
What’s the Deal With Down?
Did you know that 80% of the world’s down and other feathers used for items such as jackets, sleeping bags, and bedding comes from China? PETA’s exposé of down production shows that workers ripped birds’ feathers out while they were fully conscious. All birds used for down are ultimately shipped to slaughterhouses, where many are still conscious when their throats are slit and they’re run through the scalding-hot water of defeathering tanks.
Luckily, you can make a difference for birds by choosing compassionate hotels when you travel. Be sure to call each hotel for details.
