Earth to Everyone: These ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Heroes Want YOU to Adopt, Never Shop!

Earth to everyone: Adoption saves lives. That’s why Battlestar Galactica icons Captain Starbuck and Number Six—Katee Sackhoff (The Mandalorian) and Tricia Helfer (Lucifer)—joined forces with PETA in a video to remind human earthlings to adopt companion animals, never buy them.

The galactic heroes might butt heads sometimes, but they can always agree on one thing: You have to be on board with adoption to be a part of their fleet.

The 13th Colony (aka “Earth”) is full of adoptable companion animals.

“Even if you are looking for a specific breed, you can still adopt,” Sackhoff and her adopted pug, Nelly Bean, point out in the new PETA video.

It’s estimated that at least 25% of dogs in animal shelters are actually “purebred.” So even if you want a “purebred” dog—or cat—check out your local shelter. With millions of adoptable “purebreds” and mixed-breed dogs and cats alike, there’s no reason to support breeders, puppy mills, or pet stores, which rob animals in shelters of a chance at finding a home.

Helfer tells viewers that the companion animal adoption database Petfinder.com is “like online dating but for adoptable animals.”

Take it from these space-dwelling characters: There are many reasons to adopt.

Every adoption means an animal will no longer be waiting for a loving home at a shelter. Adoption fees also support the important daily work that shelters do to help animals, including providing vaccines, veterinary care, spaying and neutering, and euthanasia, which are all crucial to ending companion animal overpopulation and alleviating suffering.
