Sure, anyone can star-gaze on Broadway and in Beverly Hills, but since celebrities now can’t go even one meal without something vegan, you can catch them popping up at animal-friendly restaurants all across the U.S. That’s why PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—has put together its picks for the Top Five Star-Studded Vegan Restaurants that aren’t located in the Big Apple or Hollywood, and Phoenix’s Green New American Vegetarian has earned the second-place spot on the list.
Known for its beloved (and PETA award–winning) vegan chicken sandwich, meat-free buffalo wings, and decadent dairy-free ice cream, Green New American Vegetarian is a favorite Phoenix takeout spot for Bill Clinton and Madonna. Music icons Kendrick Lamar, Matisyahu, and Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy have been spotted in Green’s dining room, along with Pamela Anderson, Steve-O, The Engine 2 Diet author Rip Esselstyn, and Arizona Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall, among many others.
“With a menu of innovative po-boys, protein-rich bowls, and perfectly sweet soft serve, Green is the place for health-conscious and animal-friendly celebrities who crave vegan foods,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “None of the hot spots on PETA’s list should wait a New York minute to get a Hollywood star when their food is super-delicious and kind to animals, the environment, and people’s arteries.”
Each winner will receive a framed certificate. Top honors go to Sublime Restaurant & Bar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida—a favorite of Paul McCartney, Alec Baldwin, and Gloria Estefan. PETA’s other picks include Woodland’s Vegan Bistro in Washington, D.C., where Kanye West, Beyoncé, Kal Penn, and Ginuwine dine. The Chicago Diner, which has served Lady Gaga, Joan Jett, and Ellen DeGeneres, made the cut, as did Seattle’s Plum Bistro, whose patrons include Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Casey Affleck, and Joaquin Phoenix.
