To reach holiday revelers, PETA has placed an ad near several meat-heavy restaurants encouraging people to try to help prevent future pandemics by choosing vegan foods like tofu throughout the holiday season and year-round.

“While animal-borne diseases thrive on filthy factory farms and in slaughterhouses, tofu never caused a pandemic,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA stands ready to help people celebrate the holidays with delicious and versatile vegan foods through our free recipes, tips, mentors, and more.”

Not only is tofu cheaper than meat, it’s also packed with protein, contains no cholesterol, and can lower a person’s risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and numerous other life-threatening health issues. COVID-19 is believed to have originated in a live-animal market in China, where live and dead animals are sold for food. Previous influenza viruses have originated in pigs and chickens used for food—but never in vegan foods like tofu.

PETA offers a holiday recipe guide along with a variety of delicious tofu-based recipes on its website, such as General Tso’s Tofu and Buffalo Tofu-Scramble Breakfast Tacos and a vegan starter kit filled with more recipes and tips.

The ad is located at 3520 S. State St., near Rancherito’s Mexican Food, Chicken Express, and Ichiban Sushi and Asian Grill—which offers several tofu dishes—as well as several grocery stores—including Sprouts, WinCo Foods, and Costco—that sell tofu.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
