Suffering Pot-Bellied Pig Rescued From Virginia Couple

October 2003

PETA came to the rescue of a 9-year-old pot-bellied pig named Wilbur, who was being neglected by an elderly Virginia couple. He was extremely overweight; he had open, bleeding sores on his skin; his eyes were swollen shut; his tusks had grown so long that he could not eat comfortably; and his hooves had not been trimmed for so long that it was very painful for him to walk. He could not even stand to come out of his doghouse, so it had to be dismantled, and he was carried out on a blanket and then treated to fresh apples and bananas.
