Top Comedians ‘Stand-Up’ for Animals

Written by Michelle Kretzer | June 14, 2012

Last night, the Stand-Up for Animals PETA benefit show at the famous Comedy Store on L.A.’s Sunset Strip was funnier than a barrel of animatronic monkeys.

Bill Maher, Jane Lynch, Carol Leifer, Jeffrey Ross, Marc Maron, and host Fred Willard—in other words, some of the most talented comedians in the world—came together to raise money for PETA and kept the packed house laughing until the audience’s sides hurt.

Guests included Pink, Carey Hart, Olivia Munn, Cloris Leachman, Jorja Fox, Christian Serratos, Renee Olstead, Elisabetta Canalis, Emily Osment, and Moby, many of whom tried valiantly not to do spit takes with The Comedy Store’s delicious vegan snacks while laughing at Jeffrey Ross’ hysterical poem to his cat or Carol Leifer’s explanation that she had to go vegan because being a Jewish lesbian wasn’t enough.

Bill Maher quipped, “Before PETA was around, you know, you could f-ck with animals any way, anybody, anytime, anywhere, and now you can’t. That’s a pretty big change in the world. That’s a big achievement. … Animals will not be ignored. They’re the Glenn Close of species.”

And with all the funds raised by the end of the night, PETA can make sure that animal abusers won’t be laughing for long.

You are all so awesome to help Peta raise much needed funds to aid our wonderful furry companions – my blessings to all of you! (& of course Peta for all the countless hours, events, taking care of them, etc. You truly are a gift to them all, to help eradicate such cruelty…)

I love you Peta. I am with you. I LOVE ANIMALS. I am alerting others about the rampant cruelty all over the world. I do believe that extending compassion to animals, will fill the world with peace for humans.

What a great event to raise money for animals! This needs to be scheduled more often. Bill Maher is one of my greatest heros. I’ve watched ALL his HBO seasons and stand ups. Bill, and of course, Ingrid Newkirk/PETA (the Skinny Bitches too!) are the reason I am vegan today. Bill Maher and PETA you helped, and are helping me change, my life. You have shown me what’s really happening on this planet. All the celebs rock!

  • Daisy says:

I have more respect for people who use their celebrity status for a good cause. They are good people and someone Kim Kardashian should look up to and learn from. I have respect for her but dislike the lack of emotion and ignorance when she and Kanye flaunt their fur coats. They don’t see, dont care, or wish to disregard the innocent animal that endured abuse for the sake of “fashion”. That kind of fashion lacks compasion.

  • Debby says:

So fabulous to see people that I enjoy watching, also turning out to be of the same mind as me about how we humans treat animals and how they should be treated.

  • Lin Pirretti says:

What an awesome night it was for PETA to get much needed funding for their fight to help animals. And kudos to all the comedians who attended. You rock, PETA.
