Ways to Help Animals in Laboratories

Written by PETA | April 18, 2011

Today marks the start of World Week for Animals in Laboratories. People frequently ask PETA what they can do to help stop the abuse of animals used in experiments. Of course, we always suggest taking action in our current campaigns against animal testing and only supporting companies that are cruelty-free. But there are many other easy ways to make a difference. Here are five more steps you can take:

  1. Go vegan. Not only does eating meat cost billions of animals their lives, it also makes us sick. Experimenters then use these largely preventable diseases, such as obesity and heart disease, as an excuse to conduct cruel and deadly experiments on animals. Companies and the government also fund experiments to find ways to make factory-farmed animals grow larger faster. When you order your free vegetarian/vegan starter kit, you’ll learn how to fight cruelty on farms and in laboratories every day.
  2. Quit smoking. It may shock you, but companies like R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris continue to force rats to undergo nasty experiments in order to develop new cigarettes. Experimenters at universities also pump cigarette smoke into dogs’ lungs and addict pregnant monkeys and their babies to nicotine in order to study smoking-related diseases.
  3. Spay, neuter, and adopt. Heartless vivisectors exploit the animal overpopulation crisis by purchasing homeless animals from shelters to torment and kill in their laboratories. Spaying and neutering your animal companions and promoting animal adoptions help to cut off this supply of cheap laboratory “equipment.” PETA’s recent success in stopping pound seizure in Utah saved countless animals from a painful death in a laboratory.
  4. Donate your body to science. You can help animals in laboratories even from beyond the grave. Donate your body to science through a program like the Anatomy Gifts Registry, and it will be used at medical training and research facilities around the world to advance science and replace the use of animals.
  5. Only donate to cruelty-free charities. Sadly, some charities—including the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society—fund  cruel and ineffective experiments that harm animals and divert resources that could be spent on modern and relevant non-animal research.

Please also be sure to share this information with friends and family and encourage them to make the same compassionate decisions.

STOP THE CRUELTY! I no longer purchase any items that are tested on animals, I make sure to find the bunny on the packaging before even bothering to put it on a counter. There has to be a way to get higher authority to shut down these companies and switch animal testing with HUMAN testing. Why harm an animal when a human can take the testing way easier than a defenseless animal can.

  • Hamad Haroon says:

I find it disgusting, how someone can hurt an animal like this. You will album in hell for doing any experiment on animals. I’m horrified by the pictures, I have seen. I never knew it was this bad!

  • Lyuba says:

I must not except the cruelyu in our life!

  • Lyuba says:

    Stop the cruelty!!!

  • alexander says:

i try to quit smoking asap (i hope i do not eat then twice or even more) … to transfer further credits to peta … cigarette prices actually go up … when to quit feeding or start feed normal on this planet? a question to myself!

  • alexander says:

if quitting smoking then quit feeding – not really! there are sooooo many relations to animal abuse – thanks to peta for that great effort – i adore YOU!!!!!!

  • Natalia says:

    STOP!

  • Irina Seifert says:

I am vegetarian during 24 years I am very glad about it

  • Irina Seifert says:

    horrible

  • Cynthia Robinson says:

It is appalling, sadistic, useless… it only serves businesses like pharmaceutical companies, animal trade and people who love money and cruelty. Some humans are far from being evolved in this 21st c. and it is shameful. Care and compassion are the steps to evolution, not torture…

  • Amanda says:

I cannot believe the cruelty in this world. Many people just don’t understand that animals are living beings, just as important as humans. It is NOT okay to help people by hurting animals. It is only messing up the balance of life in the world. We need to be helping people and animals by not hurting others, including animals. Thank you for this information.

  • Roberta Paasqualucci says:

Please, give peace and life to all these living beings

A “MASS CONCIOUSNESS MOVEMENT” & “PETA- REVOLUTION” MUST BE STARTED, WHOSE FIRST LESSON SHOULD BE CREATING A SELF-CONCIOUSNESS & COMPASSIONATE FEELINGS FROM THE INNER SOUL.. AMONG THOSE CRUEL & BRUTAL PEOPLES WHO DOES NOT HAVE THE INNER CONSCIENCE & COMPASSION FOR THE ANIMALS, WHO TREAT ANIMALS SIMPLY LIKE A “LIFE-LESS OBJECTS”… I THINK THEY ARE THAT MUCH UNCONSCIOUS & IGNORANT THAT THEY BELIEVE THAT “ANIMALS DO NOT FEEL THE PAIN & TERROR”.WHAT IS THE INITIAL REQUIREMENT, IS TO TEACH THEM ABOUT ANIMALS LIFE & BIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS IS AS SIMILAR & COMPLICATED LIKE HUMAN BEINGS, IF STILL THEY DO NOT DEVELOP THE COMPASSION IN THEM & DENY TO STOP THE CRUELTIES TO THE ANIMALS, THEN THERE IS NO EXCUSE… THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE PUNISHED & LET SUFFER VERY CRUELLY..AS A REWARD OF WHAT THEY DO TO THE ANIMALS!

hey ralph.. visit, reform march of dimes.org MRMCMED.ORG & humaneseal.org, ps.. no there NOT honest. they NEVER responed to any of my emails or anybody i know of, how is that honest?.. millions if not BILLIONS of dollars have proven the fallacy of animal research. STILL no cure.. ps, “currently, nine out of ten experimental drugs FAIL in clinical studies because we cannot accurately predict how they will behave in people based on laboratory animal studies” said health and human services secretary mike leavitt. (about polio) “work on prevention of polio was LONG DELAYED by an erroneous conception of the nature of the human disease based on MISLEADING experimental models of the disease in monkeys” albert sabin, m.d., during a 1984 house subcommittee. “animal studies are done for LEGAL REASONS and not for scientific reasons. the predictive value for man is MEANINGLESS” 1964 james gallagher, medical director of lederle laboratories (uk).

  • Lisa says:

Haven’t humans done enough damage to this planet?? Can’t we stop the freakin abuse and killing of innocent animals?? What the heck is our problem?? We were not born into this world doing evil, it is a choice. Time to stand up and do what is right! I don’t know about anyone else but to be honest with you … I am totally ashamed to be part of a human race that is sooo gosh darn evil. Those that do evil should be punished in the same exact way, no if ands or buts about it, it’s only fair.

    How can I help?

  • cinzia says:

I’ve no words for these cruel world !!! this it’s no necessary to human beings !!!!!

  • Wendy Herbig says:

Shockingly primitive. They would rather torture animals than spend the money to do their jobs properly.

  • Klimenko Elena says:

    it’s just awful

  • shang says:

How can we extend love only to the animals in household but harassing the whole rest of them out there? If not ignorance or faults of ours, what is this?

  • ana maria says:

que experimenten con ellos mismos y dejen en paz a los animales…q cojan a sus mujeres las pongan a parir y con sus hijos prueben sus productos..haber q tal les sientan!!

  • Diane says:

PLEASE remember that much, if not most, animal experiment is REQUIRED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. We need to change those laws. This has to happen through our legislators. No one is acknowledging that the feds require animal experimentation. We won’t get anywhere until we attack it at its source.

  • Summer says:

There is no excuse for animal testing. It is horriffic and cannot be allowed to continue. Boycott cruel companies. The ignorance, cruelty and greed of some humans knows no bounds. Support humane businesses. I guess the people who commit vivisection don’t know about karma…what you do to another living being will come back on you in exactly equal measure, the pain, suffering and death will find the perpetrator. Karma never fails. So stop torturing and killing animals now.

  • Priya says:

ONLY IF WE ADAMANTLY REFUSE TO PUT ONE DIME IN A N Y  COMPANY THAT SUPPORTS ANIMAL TESTING WHICH IS TORTURING AT THE WORST INCLUDING DEATHS BY BURNING, CHOKING, TORTURING, POISONING, AND THE MORE HORIFIC MEANS TO “TEST”….WE HAVE TO READ AND BE AWARE OF THE CRIMES AGAINST THE ANIMALS THESE RICH ******* ARE DOING TO OUR ANIMALS WHO HAVE ONLY WE HUMANS TO PROTECT THEM….THEY HAVE NO VOICE BUT US ! ! ! ! !

  • Eleni says:

NO NO NO Reasoning whatsoever to use animals in labratories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Donna Dennis says:

We love our animals, it shows in our advertisments using their cute little faces…but, we treat them in inhuman ways. Think of them as your loved ones and treat them as you would yourself.

  • Johanna says:

Please don’t use any animals for Lab any more, they are also lives, don’t treat them so bad.

  • Indu Scott says:

thank you for helping to protect vunerable animals

i saw one video where they took a monkey like animal and with old sedatives cut open its back and later put spikes into its head and hooked it up to see its reaction to things. i could not stop sobbing, what is wrong with us. we should go extinct.we are the disease of this planet..not all of us but way to many of us. would we give our kids to these places to have them cut open, spikes in their heads, drugged etc. just to see what happens, we know what happens when we smoke..DAHHHHH when will it ever stop anybody remember the movie planet of the apes where they the apes experimented on humans..and stuffed humans and put them in a museum..we are the dumb ones..

  • Marta A. Astrada says:

Please STOP ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION!!! I donated my body to science. STOP CRUELTY TO ANIMALS!!!

  • Angel Alaris says:

I am in agreement of the comments posted here, and feel that by educating people as to how, to make the deepest impact on this issue is the best possible option, we are the consumers at the end of the day. I would rather spend a few extra pounds on products, etc, that do not use animal testing and learn and share ways of contributing to a massive change in the way we view and treat our animals. Blessings to all things green and beautiful, all creatures great and small.

  • Jeana says:

There is no justification to be made in using animals to further science. If one knows animals feel pain and they are still used in painful cruel experiments your are an evil person.

  • Jessica says:

I recently emailed Proctor & Gamble. I told them how I would not continue to support they’re company because of they’re cruel animal testing. This was before I found the video of PETA’s investigation in the Sinclair Research Center testing on poor dogs that they personally disabled for their experiments. This is the ridiculous email I received back! “Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2011 14:40:41 +0000 From: pg_naconsumerrelations@mailnj.custhelp.com Subject: Thank you for contacting P&G. [ ref:00D7JViV.5007GptdM:ref ] Thanks for contacting P&G about our policy on research involving animals, Jessica. P&G has ended animal testing on all our finished consumer products except when required by law. We use non-animal alternatives first. We only use research involving animals when there are no other reasonable options. In our Healthcare business, we’re focused on developing innovative medicines that improve people’s lives. Current regulatory standards require animal research while developing these medications. It’s our policy to use the minimum number of animals necessary while working toward our goal of the reduction and replacement of animals. We continue to identify screening techniques that are acceptable to global regulatory groups to take the place of animal tests in the earliest phase of drug discovery. Through our pet care and nutrition products, we help dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. We feed our foods first to dogs and cats to help us develop nutrition that delivers true health benefits to millions of pets worldwide. We make sure the dogs and cats we work with receive the best care. We treat them as if they’re our own pets. They are adopted into loving homes or placed in our retirement facility when their help is no longer needed. At the same time, we’re working hard on alternatives to find even better ways of getting these results and eliminating the need for additional research with other animals. We’d rather use alternative test methods. Not only is the use of animals avoided, but reliable alternative tests generally cost less and take less time than animal research. We’d like to be able to eliminate animal research on ingredients in consumer products altogether, and we’re making progress. We’ve invested over $190 million in alternatives, making us an industry leader. We’ve helped develop over 50 alternative methods and have shared our work in over 300 scientific publications. We’re also working with the FDA and respected animal welfare groups, such as the Humane Society of the United States, to work on reforming regulations and validating alternative methods. To learn more about what we’re doing to reach our goal, please visit our website: We hope this information is helpful. Terrie P&G Team” To make it short; I responded telling them that if that’s how P.G treats their pets them my hearts goes out them! And that animal testing is animal testing and thete’s no lightening the situation. I concluded that I know a lot of companies test on animals because the ingredient they use are cheaper hence more toxic, therefore they test to assure the safety of humans. But if smaller companies and even large companies (such as Method) can afford to use safer ingredients(and avoid testing) then surely P&G’s larger then life company can surely afford to do the same. They no valid excuse. Along with a more detailed version of the response above I attached this info I found so “Terrie”” could read it … http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Procter_%26_Gamble I plan on continuing to boycott and contact other companies that still take part in animal testing. I believe if these companies receive enough emails from angry and concerned consumer’s it will eventually make an impact. Please contact these cruel corporations and tell them you are boycotting them and why!

I study Medicine at Mexico City and I am familarized with using animals for training and experiments. However, I’m also aware that those animals are living beings and they feel pain the same way as we do. That’s why I make sure to apply analgesics every certain hour to prevent pain, not just to eliminate it. After the experiment or training procedure is finished, I personaly supervise their full recovery and complement their diet with fresh vegetables so they can obtain enough vitamins and heal faster. Finally, I find a place for them with a loving family who can take care of them, so they are not sacrificed. After 1 year and a half, “Sammy”, my first surgery patient, still lives with me =)

Isn’t there any other way to further science research other than torchuring animals. Please end this cruelty. Animals have the right to live happy healthy lives just as humans do!

  • Karen O'Brien says:

It just needs to be outlawed. No living creature should ever have to go through the hell they put them through. Every living being deserves love and protection.

I have a big question if someone will e-mail me please I really do want to know, When Peta and like greenpeace sees things labs like HSL,IAMs, and others do horrible things to them that shouldn’t even go on about it do they save the ones that are alive? I mean totally resicueing the animals and giving them to good homes? and do they arrest the people as well? if you know what they do please tell me I am scared and I really like to know or I won’t buy anything from them. But, anyways I am not a smoker at all but, I do eat meat but not much….ummm I really do like to know about my questions really badly I really do.
