Cora the dog spent much of her early life chained up, shivering outside in a filthy, snow-covered backyard in a rural town in North Carolina. Day and night, she could only watch from her cold, wet patch of dirt as her owners came and went and enjoyed the warmth of their house. While PETA fieldworkers visited her regularly—making sure that she had the basics, taking her treats and fresh straw bedding, and even getting her spayed—it was only when they discovered that the chain holding her fast had become painfully embedded in her neck that Cora’s owners finally agreed to relinquish her to PETA.

PETA fieldworker Heather Johnson whisked Cora away to safety on Christmas Eve, and the playful pup spent her first moments as part of a family indoors, even tearing open presents from her foster “mom.” Once her neck had healed, she was introduced to her forever home, with comfy beds, toys, and even a “Welcome Home” sign, courtesy of her new guardian, Teresa Manns. You can watch the tear-jerking PETA video here.

“Now that she’s found her forever home, Cora’s days are filled with playful romps and a regular dose of affection and attention,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “Her story is one of the many reasons why PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that ‘animals are not ours to abuse in any way’—works to help ‘backyard dogs’ across the country.”
