B-52s frontman Fred Schneider kick-started the ’80s with the breakthrough hit “Rock Lobster,” a goofy crowd-pleaser that made the band instant icons. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the party anthem, Schneider will host a PETA bash at vegan hot spot Sublime Restaurant & Bar in Fort Lauderdale and debut a new “Rock Lobster” video, in which he declares crustaceans sea life, not seafood. Schneider’s video and accompanying blog post for PETA have already made a splash in seafood hubs such as Boston and Canada, but Sunday afternoon’s event will be the first time that the video will hit South Florida.

When:   Sunday, April 6, 3:30–5:30 p.m.

Where:  Sublime Restaurant & Bar, 1431 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale

Sunday’s event will also pay tribute to other sea creatures—notably orcas. The producer of the documentary Blackfish, which has reached 21 million people since it first aired on CNN in October, will be honored along with Schneider. As this story shows, Blackfish changed the way that society regards the imprisonment of orcas in amusement parks such as SeaWorld and the Miami Seaquarium. To acknowledge this achievement, Fort Lauderdale philanthropist and restaurateur Nanci Alexander will present Blackfish‘s producer, Manny Oteyza, with the 2014 Nanci Alexander Award.

In addition to being a pioneer for new-wave culture, Schneider was among PETA’s first celebrity supporters. The B-52s have hosted PETA events all the way back to the ’80s.
