‘Climate Change Cow’ to Demand Change at Starbucks

PETA Will Call On Coffee Chain to Drop Vegan Milk Surcharge—for the Planet's Sake

Seattle – Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson recently acknowledged that vegan milk is “a big part of the solution” in reducing the company’s carbon footprint—so PETA’s “climate change cow” will deliver a letter to Starbucks’ corporate headquarters today calling on the company to put its words into action and stop charging extra for vegan milk.

“Starbucks admits that cow’s milk is its biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions, yet it’s still charging up to 80 cents more for soy and nut milk lattes,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “If Starbucks is really serious about reducing its carbon footprint, it should walk the walk and drop the vegan surcharge immediately.”

In today’s dairy industry, cows are artificially inseminated (raped via an inserted syringe) and calves are torn away from their loving mothers within a day of birth. According to the United Nations, animal agriculture is responsible for nearly a fifth of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions and a global shift to vegan eating is vital if we are to combat the worst effects of climate change.
