PETA Offers Free Remote-Learning Resources for Parents During COVID-19 Outbreak

As parents across the country scramble to find ways to educate and entertain their children in the face of COVID-19–related school closures, TeachKind—PETA’s humane ­­education division—is encouraging parents to take advantage of its free online educational resources, activities, and lesson plans for students of all ages.

Its reading comprehension exercises for kids in grades K–12 and dozens of writing prompts for middle and high school students can help kids flex their English skills. PETA’s fun posters can prompt a discussion about animal-friendly idioms—like “feed two birds with one scone”—and lessons about pronouns can help teach students in grades K–2 or 3–5 that animals are someone, not something. “Share the World,” which includes an online video, helps even the youngest learners develop empathy for animals—and PETA Kids offers fun activities for kids under 12, including comic books, games, and videos.

TeachKind can also point parents toward inexpensive digital dissection tools, like eMind, which have built-in quizzes to test students on their knowledge of animal anatomy—acquired without harming a single animal.

“Schools may be closed, but kids’ minds are still wide open, and they can keep on learning how to be good citizens at home, with PETA and TeachKind here to help,” says PETA Director of Student Campaigns and Influence Rachelle Owen. “With our worksheets, writing prompts, videos, and games, students can stay busy and hone their reading and writing skills while learning to have compassion and empathy for others.”

Year round, TeachKind offers free lesson plans, classroom materials, teacher workshops, and more to help educators add compassion for animals to their curriculum. Its staff is even available to host classroom presentations for students via Skype—for free.
