School District Cancels Cruel ‘Donkey Basketball’ Game

January 2008

A local resident contacted PETA after she learned that Lewisville High School in Richburg, South Carolina, planned to hold a “donkey basketball” game. Donkey basketball is a cruel “sport” and is miserable for the animals involved. The noise and chaos of the games are extremely stressful for donkeys, who often endure the additional trauma of being shoved, kicked, screamed at, or whipped when they are found to be “uncooperative” by their riders. The school system nixed the game after reviewing PETA’s letter that outlined the cruelty of the proposal as well as the liability concerns for the school given the potential for human injury.
