PETA Protest Will Call for End to University’s Cruel and Ineffective Muscular Dystrophy Experiments on Dogs

What:    On Friday, PETA supporters will descend on Texas A&M University’s (TAMU) Distinguished Alumni Gala to call on awardee Chancellor John Sharp to put his TAMU clout to good use by demanding an end to the university’s horrendously cruel muscular dystrophy (MD) experiments on golden retrievers and other dogs.

When:    Friday, October 5, 5 p.m.

Where:    Northwest corner of George Bush Drive W. and Olsen Boulevard, College Station

Eyewitness video footage obtained by PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—shows dogs in TAMU’s laboratories who were deliberately bred to develop a crippling and painful form of MD. As the disease ravaged their bodies, they struggled to walk, swallow, and even breathe. Those without symptoms who carried the gene for the disease were used for breeding. The video shows these dogs frantically pacing on the slatted floors and biting at the bars of small cages in frustration.

“The dogs at Texas A&M don’t get to leave school and move on with their lives as these alumni did—they suffer and die on campus,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA is appealing to the ‘distinguished’ alumni of this university to step up and help end these archaic tests.”
