For both airing and creating groundbreaking movies and documentaries that expose the abuse of animals in marine parks, circuses, and the meat and dairy industries and making them widely available to millions of viewers in the comfort of their homes, game-changing entertainment company Netflix has been named PETA’s 2017 Company of the Year and will receive a framed award certificate.

PETA is recognizing Netflix for offering eco-friendly, pro-vegan films—including Cowspiracy, What the Health, Forks Over Knives, and Okja—as well as for hard-hitting documentaries about animals used for entertainment, such as Blackfish and Tyke Elephant Outlaw. These must-sees have inspired people to go vegan and to stop supporting businesses that force animals to perform—all because Netflix provides a platform for truthful storytelling.

“Netflix is PETA’s Company of the Year for its arsenal of honest and humane films and documentaries that open people’s eyes to who animals are, how our actions affect their lives, and how killing and eating them causes so much harm,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “This company is creating a kinder, more compassionate world by showing millions of viewers that animals are thinking, feeling beings just like us.”

Following Okja‘s release, demand for PETA’s vegan starter kits skyrocketed, and after watching What the Health, celebrities—such as Ne-Yo, Lewis Hamilton, and Jahlil Okafor—were persuaded to eat vegan, while SeaWorld’s stock value and attendance numbers have both continued to plummet since Blackfish was added to Netflix.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that vegans have a smaller carbon footprint and a reduced risk of suffering from heart attacks, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and strokes than meat-eaters do, and they spare more than 100 animals a year daily suffering and a terrifying death in today’s meat, egg, and dairy industries. In addition, a United Nations report concluded that a global switch to vegan eating is vital if we are to combat the worst effects of climate change.

Past award winners include Beyond Meat, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising Bangkok, Daiya, and Emulate.
