From Barbecue to Buffalo and Beyond, PETA Honors Animal-Friendly Offerings Around the Country

Norfolk, Va. – There are new contenders in the “Chicken Sandwich Wars”! PETA is releasing its list of the Top 21 Vegan Chicken Sandwiches of 2019 around the country, honoring winners ranging from the “honey” mustard–topped OG Sando at Los Angeles’ Lettuce Feast to the spicy Buffalo Bleu Chik-n Sandwich at The Cider Press Café in St. Petersburg, Florida.
National U.S. chains grabbed kudos, too, including Veggie Grill for its fried-to-perfection Nashville Hot Chickin’ Sandwich and Native Foods for its fiery Peri Peri “Chicken” Sandwich.
“All the winners on PETA’s list soar high above old, meaty chicken sandwiches, which are basic, boring, and cruel to birds,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Whether you’re after a spicy Buffalo sauce or a breaded parmigiana patty, there’s a delicious vegan chicken sandwich to satisfy any taste.”
PETA notes that vegan chicken sandwiches contain none of the saturated animal fat or cholesterol found in their meat-based counterparts—and they spare animals immense suffering. In today’s meat industry, chickens are crammed by the tens of thousands into filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At the slaughterhouse, their throats are cut, often while they’re still conscious, and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year.
