Covered only with bodypaint representing the Earth’s oceans and continents, three nearly naked PETA women will turn heads in front of The Bay Centre in Victoria on Friday, Earth Day. The PETA members will give curious passersby more than an eyeful—they’ll also distribute free vegan starter kits and share how we can all do our part for the environment simply by choosing healthy, humane vegan meals.

Where:           In front of The Bay Centre, 1150 Douglas St., Victoria

When:             Friday, April 22, 12 p.m.

“The meat and dairy industries are draining our water supply, wrecking forests, and helping to warm the global climate,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “There’s no better time than Earth Day to stick a fork in climate change, and PETA is calling on people everywhere to pitch in by going vegan.”

According to the United Nations, raising animals for food is “a top contributor to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.” It takes an amount of water equivalent to six months’ worth of showers to produce just 1 pound of meat, and animal agriculture is a major producer of the greenhouse-gas emissions that cause climate change. And, of course, the meat industry is responsible for the daily suffering and terrifying deaths of billions of animals every year. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” —encourages anyone who’s concerned about the environment to go vegan.
