‘Sheep’ to Ask Chicago Black Friday Shoppers for a ‘Wool-Free Winter’

Shopping on Black Friday can be stressful—but this Friday, PETA will be on hand with some relief. A costumed “sheep” will greet the throngs of early morning shoppers with free sheep-shaped stress balls—and an appeal to keep all sweaters, scarves, and gloves made of wool off holiday shopping lists. As part of PETA’s #WoolFreeWinter campaign, the “sheep” will tell shoppers that PETA’s international exposé of the wool industry revealed that workers violently punched scared sheep in the face, stomped and stood on the animals’ heads and necks, and beat and jabbed them in the face with electric clippers and a hammer. Some sheep even died from the abuse.

“Most shoppers have no idea that to produce wool sweaters, gentle sheep are often punched in the face, slammed into the floor, stomped on, and even killed by impatient shearers,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on all kind people to have a wool-free winter.”
PETA’s “sheep” will also make #WoolFreeWinter appeals to Black Friday shoppers in Springfield, Mo.; Phoenix; and San Diego.
