Tucker, Ga.

On Tuesday evening, a DeKalb County resident made a horrifying discovery: A dog had been buried alive up to her nose on an ATV trail near Rock Mountain Boulevard and Lewis Road in Tucker, and she may have been left there for three days. The man dug out the tightly packed dirt and rushed the brown chow mix, whom he named Lulu, to receive emergency veterinary care—but despite veterinarians’ efforts to save her, she died.

Law-enforcement officials are investigating but have yet to determine who buried Lulu, which is why PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty charges of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

“Someone tortured this dog by packing her in dirt, where she couldn’t move, drink, or escape the terror of being buried alive,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA urges anyone with information about this case to come forward immediately so that whoever buried this dog can be held responsible and stopped from hurting anyone else.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—advises families to keep their animal companions safely indoors and never leave them unattended outside, where they may be taken or hurt by cruel humans. Dogs should always be accompanied in the backyard and escorted on walks on a comfortable, secure harness and leash.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call DeKalb County Animal Control at 404-294-2939.
