Because Starbucks agrees that animal-friendly vegan milks are better for the planet but insists on charging extra for them, PETA protesters will be outside the chain’s location on Watt Avenue on Monday, getting would-be Starbucks customers to shun the company’s offerings and instead enjoy free nitro cold brew mochas made with creamy oat milk. The action comes after nearly 150,000 PETA supporters asked Starbucks to end its vegan upcharge.

“Starbucks is counting its beans when it should be counting the number of customers it will lose if it doesn’t end the vegan milk upcharge soon,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “People who want to drink responsibly for the sake of animals or their own health or because they know that dairy farming is fueling the climate crisis are angry with the company for placing profits above ethics.”

PETA is also holding vegan coffee drink giveaways outside Starbucks locations in Loveland, Colorado; Omaha, Nebraska; Cincinnati; and several other cities.

Where:           Starbucks, 610 Watt Ave., Sacramento

When:             Monday, January 3, 1:15 p.m.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
