Just in time for Earth Day, a group of PETA members will hit downtown San Antonio with bags full of fresh produce and, using a volunteer as a model, create a floor-length gown made entirely out of collard greens. Other PETA members will distribute PETA’s “Meat’s Not Green” leaflets and copies of “Glass Walls,” a video exposé of the meat industry narrated by Paul McCartney, to let people know that the best thing that they can do for animals, the environment, and their own body is to go vegan.

When:   Tuesday, April 22, noon

Where:  At the intersection of Losoya and E. Commerce streets, San Antonio

“PETA’s message for Earth Day and year-round is that it’s impossible to ‘go green’ without going vegan,” says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. “Between polluting the soil, water, and air and gobbling up our natural resources, the meat industry is as toxic to the Earth as it is to human health.”

According to the United Nations, raising animals for food is “a top contributor to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.” It takes an amount of water equivalent to six months’ worth of showers to produce just 1 pound of meat, and factory farms are a major producer of the greenhouse-gas emissions that cause climate change. And of course, the meat industry is responsible for the daily suffering and terrifying deaths of billions of animals every year.
