While Diners Can Choose Gluttony, Cows on Factory Farms Have No Say in Their Deaths

Las Vegas, Nev. – After last night’s “Gluttony” episode of the new Showtime series 7 Deadly Sins, the whole world knows about Heart Attack Grill’s devastating impact on its diners’ health. But what about its devastating impact on the cows and pigs who are killed for its burgers and bacon? That’s what PETA hopes to highlight in a new billboard that shows a cow’s face next to the words “A Burger Stops a Beating Heart. You May Not Value Your Own Life, but She Values Hers. Go Vegan.” The group is negotiating with Las Vegas–area outdoor advertisers and hopes to secure placement as close as possible to the restaurant.
“A Quadruple Bypass Burger at Heart Attack Grill might stop the heart of the person who chooses to eat it, but it definitely stopped the heart of a cow who spent his or her whole life in misery and met a bloody, violent end,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s billboard will remind diners that burgers, bacon strips, and cheese aren’t just unhealthy—they’re also the products of immense animal suffering.”
Most cows raised for food spend their lives on massive, filthy feedlots, while cows on dairy farms are repeatedly impregnated and then traumatically separated from their newborn calves until their bodies wear out and they’re sent to slaughter. At slaughterhouses, animals are hung upside down and have their throats slit, often while they’re still conscious and able to feel pain.
Meat, eggs, and dairy products contain no fiber and are loaded with artery-clogging saturated animal fat and cholesterol. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vegetarians are less prone to developing heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer than meat-eaters are.
