While many of its competitors are falling short, locally headquartered Gap is a leader in selling stylish vegan clothing, and for that, it’s being crowned the winner of a 2023 PETA Fashion Award for Overall Most Vegan-Friendly Company. The iconic brand’s vast, well-curated inventory is now almost entirely vegan, including high-quality items from its Vegan-Leather Shop, supersoft animal-friendly cashmere products from its CashSoft Shopand its on-trend, down-free Big Puff line, featuring a cozy classic coat and a cropped jacket and vest.

“Gap knows that innovative, climate- and animal-friendly vegan materials are the future of fashion,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is urging other retailers to take note and embrace stylish, animal-free clothing and accessories that bridge the gap toward a more humane world.”

PETA has released nine exposés of the down industry, in which workers cut the feet off live, struggling birds and stab them in the neck while still conscious. A PETA investigation into cashmere operations in Mongolia revealed workers dragging goats onto the “kill floor,” hitting them over the head with a hammer, and slitting their throats in full view of other goats, often failing to kill them instantly. And in the leather industry, eyewitness videos from PETA entities have shown calves branded on the face and cows routinely beaten, electroshocked, and forced onto long, grueling journeys in all weather extremes to slaughterhouses.

Other winners of 2023 PETA Fashion Awards include Abercrombie & Fitch, Canada Goose, Max Mara, Alice + Olivia, Gucci, and Versace.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
