New YorkGame of Thrones star Jerome Flynn—who plays Bronn in the hit series— has teamed up with PETA for a new video exposing the horrors of the meat and dairy industries, urging fans to leave cruelty off their plates in 2019 as many embark on their New Year’s resolutions.

“If we’re true to our own values, can we really justify inflicting all this suffering and violence on these emotionally sensitive, smart individuals just for a fleeting moment of taste?” asks Flynn in the video. “I don’t think so. Please, join me in rejecting this cruelty. Join me in choosing healthy, ethical, vegan meals.”

Flynn also sat down for an exclusive video interview with PETA U.K. in which he shared his journey toward going vegan. “I actually fell in love with somebody at college who was a vegan, and she brought me some PETA leaflets,” he says. “It was educational stuff about the way animals are treated, and I had no idea.… [W]e’re not really educated to link the food on our plate to the animals [who] we love.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that animals raised for food are typically mutilated without painkillers, artificially inseminated, kept in intense confinement, and separated from their beloved offspring and that they may be transported to the slaughterhouse in the freezing cold or suffocating heat. There, they’re hung upside down and their throats are cut, often in full view of one another, sometimes while they’re still conscious and struggling to escape.

Flynn is part of a growing list of celebrities—including his Game of Thrones co-star Peter Dinklage as well as Alan Cumming, Alec Baldwin, Edie Falco, Lily Tomlin, and Taraji P. Henson—who have teamed up with PETA or its affiliates to promote kindness to animals.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?” READ MORE
