Because the demand for vegan meals and the popularity of meal-kit delivery services are growing every year, PETA set out to grade more than two dozen such services on their vegan-friendliness—and New York–based Blue Apron was one of only four companies to nab an F.

While more than a dozen companies are either entirely vegan or make it easy to select vegan meals, Blue Apron’s customer service tells customers wanting to order vegan meals to give the eggs and dairy “products” to friends and purchase their own replacements, which forces ethical consumers to pay for cruelly produced items.

“When dozens of companies are delivering delicious, healthy quick-to-cook meals, Blue Apron’s total failure to offer any meals without meat, eggs, or dairy ‘products’ earned it a big fat F,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s message to Blue Apron is to clean up its act, get with the times, and start offering vegan meals.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that in the meat industry, chickens’ and turkeys’ throats are slit while they’re still conscious, piglets are castrated and their tails are cut off without any painkillers, and cows are hung upside down and bled to death, often while they’re still able to feel pain. In addition to sparing animals immense suffering, vegans have a lower risk of suffering from heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes than meat-eaters do.

While Blue Apron earned an F, eight all-vegan companies—including Veestro, Purple Carrot, and 22 Days Nutrition—earned top marks. Vegan-friendly companies such as Chef’d—which is now offering the Beyond Burger as an option—and Paleta earned Bs for their numerous easy-to-find vegan options. The other companies that received Fs are PeachDish, Plated, and Dinnerly.
