PETA is preparing to crown this year’s “Sexiest Vegan Next Door“—and one Bellingham firefighter and EMT is vying for the title. Lifelong Washingtonian Lucas Huyber beat out hundreds of other entrants from across the nation to advance to the final round of 10 male and 10 female contestants. Visitors to PETA.org can help PETA select the winners—one man and one woman—who will each receive a free vacation for two to Maui, Hawaii, courtesy of Humane Travel.

As an EMT, Huyber frequently checked his own vitals—so when he noticed that his blood pressure was elevated, he knew it was time for a change. After watching What the Health on Netflix, he decided to go vegan. After just a year, his blood pressure had drop dramatically, he’d lost weight, and his skin had cleared up. He also credits vegan eating with boosting his immune system. “I really feel that this is one of the best choices I have ever made,” he says. “I now feel guilt-free, and I feel so much healthier.”

When he’s not fighting fires, working as a security guard, or volunteering at a food pantry or center for people with developmental disabilities, Huyber can be found dishing up vegan meals for his fellow firefighters—jackfruit pulled “pork” is a firehouse favorite. Many members of his crew are starting to follow his lead and embrace vegan meals, and so is his father—a former slaughterhouse worker. He currently shares his home and land with adopted dogs, ducks, chickens, and a rabbit.

“Lucas Huyber is one firefighter who’s ready to protect all living beings, both on and off duty,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “All the finalists in PETA’s Sexiest Vegan contest prove that a clear conscience and a compassionate heart are the secret ingredients to sexiness.”

Voting to help PETA determine which finalists it should select as the winners ends at 12 noon EDT on May 14. PETA will select the winners based on several factors, including vote count. See the full contest details here. Winners will be notified and announced on May 21.
