Last week, managers at the Greeneville–Greene County Humane Society responded to a harrowing call that led them to a frightened and crying stray cat who had an arrow piercing his chest. They whisked the cat, now named Miracle Milligan, to Duckworth Animal Hospital, where the arrow was successfully removed. He is currently recovering from surgery and will soon be up for adoption. Authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the case, prompting PETA to offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible, in addition to an offer of $750 from local residents.

“Every moment that this cat spent struggling to move with an arrow piercing his body was agony,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is urging anyone with information about the attacker or attackers to come forward immediately, before anyone else gets hurt.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—also stresses the importance of keeping cats indoors. In addition to being hurt by cruel people, cats who roam outdoors risk contracting communicable diseases; getting lost, injured, or hit by an automobile; or being snatched up by “bunchers”—people who steal dogs and cats and sell them for use in experiments.

Anyone with information about this case should contact the Greeneville Police Department at 423-639-7111.
