When I heard about the terrible things that happen to bees who are farmed for honey, I knew that honey was one more thing that I just couldn’t support. Things became easy when I discovered that there are so many wonderful sweetener options for vegans. The following are some of my favorites:

1. Brown rice syrup

You can use this sweetener for morning tea or even baking.

2. Maple syrup

It’s perfect for vegan pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or anything that needs a warm sweetener.

3. Yacon root syrup

This low-glycemic sweetener, which comes from a Peruvian plant similar to the sunflower, can replace honey in any recipe.

4. Agave

Raw foodies may opt for agave in smoothies, salad dressings, and just about anything that needs a touch of sweetness.

5. Molasses

Holiday baking just wouldn’t be the same without this ingredient. Try blackstrap or Barbados varieties.

Gingerbread cookies

6. Date syrup

DIY! Easily make your own date syrup using Medjool dates, water, and lemon juice. Blend them to the perfect consistency, and enjoy your homemade sweetener.
