During last night’s Unstoppable event in Norfolk, Virginia, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk kicked things off by co-presenting with Alysoun Mahoney the Gregory J. Reiter Award to the Virginia Beach (VB) SPCA. This award was presented to honor the organization’s compassionate service to the community’s animals. Alysoun is a PETA patron and the wife of the late Greg Reiter, for whom the award is named.

The VB SPCA offers shelter and care to almost 4,000 companion animals each year. Last year, it took in over 250 dogs and cats from PETA’s cruelty and neglect cases.

Many of the animals PETA transferred there had been chained up and simply forgotten for their entire lives, and they were desperately in need of care. VB SPCA staff and volunteers at this beautiful shelter worked hard to socialize these refugees and place them into solid, secure, responsible, and loving homes. Many of these animals’ success stories simply would not have been possible without the valued partnership of the VB SPCA.

The Gregory J. Reiter Award is given annually to an individual or group that demonstrates inspiring compassion and dedication to animals. Greg was a beloved longtime member of the PETA family who passed away in 2015.

Alysoun carries on the legacy of kindness that the couple shared, still providing exemplary stewardship and a loving home to dogs, cats, horses, and wildlife who, without her, would have nowhere to go.
