Imperiled Pup Saved by Dogged Pursuer

Published by PETA.

An intrepid PETA supporter followed a driver for nearly an hour after spotting a dog perched precariously on the back of a flatbed truck as it sped down a highway near Austin, Texas. The witness first called 911, but the operator didn’t seem terribly concerned, so the woman called PETA. When the truck pulled off the interstate in Cedar Park, PETA called the local police. An officer tracked down the driver, ticketed him, told him how unsafe his actions were, and confiscated the dog.

While a flatbed truck is especially dangerous, dogs should never be carried in any open truck bed. In the event of an accident—or even an abrupt stop—the dog can be thrown out of the bed and into the road. If you see a dog in the back of a pickup truck, contact the local police department or, if you’re on a highway, the state police.
