The terror that animals feel as they’re separated from their families, crammed into dark windowless sheds, and then loaded onto trucks and sent to slaughter is more than most humans can even bear to imagine. Yet there’s an even more shocking trend emerging, in which animals bypass the slaughterhouse altogether and are instead eaten while they’re still alive.
Several videos have recently surfaced online that show diners feasting on conscious animals. Often, the animals who are dismembered or cooked while alive must come face to face with their tormentors as their bodies are eaten, piece by piece.
At restaurants in New York and California, octopuses—after enduring a harrowing shipment halfway around the world—are hacked apart and served in a Korean dish called “sannakji” (literally, “wriggling octopus”).
Another video shows a young woman eating a bullfrog’s body bit by bit as he stares helplessly back at her, unable to escape from the bowl.
One horrifying dish is called San Zhi Er, or “three squeaks,” after the distressing cries that mice make when they’re picked up with chopsticks, dipped into sauce, and eaten alive.
The fish in this video can be seen gasping, his gills opening wide, as a person further torments him by poking and prodding his fried body with chopsticks. In a particularly gruesome moment, the diner uses the chopsticks to peel off a large chunk of the fish’s flesh to be eaten.
