Win for Dogs All Day Long in This Dream Job

Molly was just a few months old when she was put out on a chain in rural North Carolina. PETA fieldworkers visited her regularly to untangle her tether and give her food and water, a sturdy doghouse, deworming medicine, and emergency veterinary care when she suffered from a dangerous uterine prolapse. Despite repeated pleas from our fieldworkers, Molly’s owners refused to bring her inside or let us have her. Then, one hot August day, fieldworkers found her lifeless body in a shallow hole that she’d dug in a futile attempt to escape the heat. She was only 2 years old.

Since last year, there have been at least 104 hot weather–related animal deaths across the country—and those are just the reported ones. We don’t want any more dogs to suffer and die like Molly and these other victims, which is why we’ve created a new PETA job devoted to working with communities to strengthen laws protecting “backyard dogs.” We want to see “Molly’s Law”—a ban on 24/7 tethering—pass everywhere!

PETA is looking for a highly motivated person to be our local community outreach liaison working out of the Sam Simon Center—our Norfolk, Virginia, headquarters. We’re eager to find someone who can help us advance legislation such as chaining bans and use social media campaigns to spread awareness of the ways people can help neglected dogs.

“If you’re a persuasive, creative, energetic, highly motivated person who wants to help dogs and prevent them from suffering in extreme heat and winter cold, apply to PETA to lead our campaign to end 24/7 chaining nationwide,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “The right person could be the key to ending this crisis in which dogs endure deprivation and isolation when chained outdoors without shade, water, respect, or relief from loneliness and severe weather.”

Your task will be to coordinate PETA’s outreach to the public and elected officials regarding the plight of chained dogs. In this role, you can expect to write to and sit down with decision-makers and to advance the welfare of “outdoor dogs.”

Are you the person lonely chained dogs have been waiting for?
