Victory: Alternative Apparel Stops Wool Sales After PETA Appeal

Company Nabs Vegan Chocolate Sheep in Thanks for Compassionate Decision

After PETA informed Alternative Apparel about shocking, systemic cruelty in the wool industry, the Norcross-based clothing company announced that it will no longer produce items made from wool.

“Alternative Apparel did the right thing after learning that crying sheep are dragged to the shearing floor and punched in the face and that their throats are even slit—all for wool sweaters and hats,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “This company’s compassionate, business-savvy decision proves that retailers don’t have to choose between being fashionable and being kind, and PETA urges other retailers to follow suit.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—has released two new video exposés recorded on sheep farms in Australia, the world’s largest exporter of wool. Workers beat petrified sheep, mutilated them, and slit the throats of fully conscious animals. One sheep kicked for nearly a minute after the manager began cutting her throat, and he said that some kick for a “bloody couple of minutes.” The videos are PETA’s 10^th and 11^th exposés of cruelty in the global wool industry since 2014.
