On the morning of Tuesday, November 27, librarians at the Russell Memorial Library on Taylor Road in Chesapeake witnessed a horrible sight: Someone pulled into the parking lot, grabbed a small dog from the trunk of the car, and threw the terrier mix into the woods behind the building before driving away. The librarians rushed to retrieve the dog, who is now in the care of Chesapeake Animal Services and is still limping on her back leg, an injury she likely sustained from being thrown. In thanks for rescuing the dog, PETA is sending the kind librarians a vegan gift basket.

Police are investigating but have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident, prompting PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—to offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty-to-animals charges of the person or persons responsible for the crime.

Someone may recognize this dog, and it might be the only way to apprehend whoever is responsible for this act.

“It takes a cruel and callous person to throw a dog into the woods in the freezing cold and drive away,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA urges anyone ill-equipped to care for an animal simply to surrender him or her to a shelter, and we’re asking for the public’s help in identifying this person before anyone else gets hurt.”

Anyone with information about this crime is encouraged to contact Animal Control Supervisor Sharon Maddox at 757-382-8089.
