UGG’s 40th Anniversary Party to Prompt PETA Protest: ’40 Years of Cruelty!’
Protesters Will Descend on the Chateau Marmont to Urge Footwear Brand to Stop Using Skin Stolen From Sheep for Shoes

What: UGG’s 40th anniversary party at the Chateau Marmont tomorrow evening will have some unexpected attendees: a group of PETA protesters who will gather outside the Hollywood hotel to call on UGG to ditch cruelly obtained wool and sheepskin and modernize its brand by selling cruelty-free and environmentally friendly vegan shoes instead. The protest comes just a year after a PETA social media campaign juxtaposing UGG boots with pools of blood went viral.

“Every UGG boot represents the suffering and fear of gentle sheep who were slaughtered and skinned for these shoes,” says PETA Manager of Clothing Campaigns Christina Sewell. “PETA is calling on kind people everywhere to turn on their faux-shearling heel and walk away from UGG until it commits to sparing sheep by ditching wool and shearling.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”— notes that every year, millions of sheep are castrated and parts of their tails are cut off before they’re killed and their skin is torn off to make UGG boots and other shearling products. Eight PETA exposés of 72 facilities on four continents have revealed that sheep are routinely mutilated, abused, and even skinned alive in the international wool industry.
