The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) decision not to roll back the already-meager protections for animals in exploitative businesses such as laboratories, puppy mills, and roadside zoos was the right one. PETA came out swinging against this misguided proposal through a lawsuit, written comments, and appearances at USDA meetings. Now PETA is calling on the agency to take the next logical step and abandon its outrageous pilot program of announcing some inspections in advance, which gives facilities an opportunity to clean up and hide away evidence of suffering as well as dead and dying animals.
