What:    With their bare chests covered by little more than paint reading, “Stop Seal Pup Kill” and “Seal Kill Bleeds Taxes,” a group of PETA members will gather in downtown Toronto on Tuesday and set off red smoke bombs. The action will symbolize the blood bath caused by the East Coast commercial seal slaughter, which began on April 9 and, according to a study by the University of Guelph, costs Canadian taxpayers about $7 million a year.

When:    Tuesday, April 10, 12 noon

Where:    Intersection of Yonge and Dundas streets, Toronto

“For years, the Canadian government has poured millions of taxpayer dollars into a failing industry in which gentle young seals are shot, bludgeoned, and skinned,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on Prime Minister Trudeau to stop sending Canadian money up in smoke and end subsidies to this cruel industry.”

During the commercial slaughter, seals are left to suffer from gunshot wounds until sealers arrive to crush the young animals’ skulls with a hakapik. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—notes that there’s no longer a market for seal meat and there are few remaining major markets for seal fur, as the U.S., the E.U., Russia, Mexico, Taiwan, and India have all banned it.
