Montréal police are investigating an apparently deliberate attack on two dogs in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie on Friday, June 17, after the Szalowski family reported that meatballs embedded with razor blades had been thrown into their backyard (in the alley between Saint-Vallier Street and Chateaubriand Avenue). One of the family’s two dogs, Molly, ate part of the meatballs and incurred deep cuts to her mouth and throat. She was rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic, where she underwent surgery to remove the blades.

Law-enforcement officials have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident, prompting PETA to offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

“It’s hard to imagine the terror and agonizing pain that this dog felt when the razor blades began to cut into her sensitive mouth and throat,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is urging anyone with information about this apparently deliberate attack to come forward now so that the person responsible for this crime can be held accountable and prevented from hurting anyone else.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—cautions families to keep an eye on animal companions and never leave them unattended when they’re outdoors, where they can be hurt by cruel humans or attacked by other animals.

Anyone with information about this case should call Montréal police at 514-393-1133.
