The Niagara Regional Police Service is investigating the apparent deliberate poisoning of two family dogs in Fort Erie last month. The Sunners family’s Great Pyrenees dogs suddenly fell ill, suffering from immobility, respiratory problems, seizures, and organ failure, which led to their deaths overnight. Detectives reportedly discovered tainted meat in the dogs’ outdoor pen, and veterinarians determined that they had ingested poison at least 72 to 24 hours before they started showing symptoms on May 18.

Law-enforcement officials have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident, prompting PETA to offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

“These dogs undoubtedly endured agonizing pain, terror, and confusion as, one by one, their organs began to shut down,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is urging anyone with information about their deaths to come forward now so that their killer can be held accountable for his or her crime and stopped from hurting anyone else.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—cautions families to keep an eye on animal companions and never leave them unattended when they’re outdoors, where they can be hurt by cruel humans and attacked by other animals.

Anyone with information about this case should call the Niagara Regional Police Service at 905-871-2300, extension 2321.
