Pink and Gillian Anderson star in a new video and Web campaign urging the New York City Council to support Mayor de Blasio’s bill to move horse-drawn carriages off the streets and into Central Park. The bill comes up for a vote this Friday at City Hall.

“Hi, this is Pink, asking you to pretty, pretty please vote ‘yes’ on the bill to move the carriage horses to Central Park,” says the pop icon in a video that PETA will circulate among councilmembers on Wednesday. “I love New York for its crazy, loud street scene—but it sucks if you’re a horse. Other cities resolved this issue years ago. Let’s do it now in New York.”

Gillian Anderson, whose re-boot of the The X-Files drew 20 million viewers last week, will also take action through personal letters to the council and PETA ads on a political site. “I love New York, but I’m astonished that the city still allows shackled horses to dodge taxis, buses, and police cars every day,” says Anderson. “Last year’s police report on the dozens of awful accidents was no surprise. Congested cities as diverse as Toronto, Mumbai, and San Juan have reined in the dangerous carriage trade. Please do the same in New York by voting for the bill that keeps the horses in the park.” Anderson’s full PETA ad from City & State can be viewed here.

Other stars—including Alan Cumming, Tim Gunn, and Russell Simmons—have also tweeted their support. The bill seeks to prohibit the horses’ sale for slaughter, remove them from hectic street traffic, and limit their circuits to Central Park, where they would live in larger stalls and be able to stretch their legs after pulling carriages all day.
