PETA Foundation Counsel Rachel Mathews released the following statement about the National Elephant Center, which is reportedly sending away the last two elephants left at the facility:

As the National Elephant Center (NEC) announces its plans to place its last two elephants in zoos, many serious questions remain unanswered, including whether the premature deaths of four elephants there in the last two years were preventable and why key staff members left the facility. Elephants are sensitive, complex individuals who need acres to roam, ponds to swim in, and the companionship of others of their kind—needs that can never truly be met in captivity. Captive elephants suffer, and we hope the NEC will carefully consider that fact and commit never to breed more.
