PETA Foundation Deputy General Counsel Delcianna Winders has released the following statement regarding George Carden International Circus’ announcement that it will phase out elephant acts by 2019:

George Carden International Circus’ announcement comes on the heels of Ringling Bros.’ promise to phase out elephant acts—further proof that the public rejects the practice of separating baby elephants from their mothers and chaining and beating these sensitive, intelligent animals in order to force them to perform silly tricks. But four more years of misery under the big top is too long. PETA is calling on the George Carden International Circus to end its elephant acts now and on George Carden to send the elephants to sanctuaries immediately so that they can live out the rest of their lives in peace.
