Cat-Loving Celebrities

During Cat Week 2011, fantastic felines take center stage on PETA’s website. Year-round, these cute critters have earned a starring role in the hearts of many Hollywood heavyweights. Check out these kitty-loving celebrities who give cats “two paws up”:

  • Battlestar Galactica‘s Tricia Helfer stars in a PETA ad that encourages people to be their cat’s angel! Clean cats’ litterboxes daily, give them plenty of clean water, have them spayed or neutered, make sure that they have a cozy window seat for gazing outside, never allow them outside without supervision, play with them, and give them lots of love and affection every day.

  • Self-proclaimed cat person James Franco makes us swoon with his cat-cuddling ways. This picture of Franco and his kitties, Zelda and Sammy, gives new meaning to the term “cat nap.”
  • Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba appears in a PETA ad with her rescued feline friend, Shadow, to promote spaying and neutering. In the U.S. alone, more than 7 million unwanted dogs and cats are turned in to animal shelters every year, and almost half of these animals will be euthanized because there aren’t enough good homes for them. Having your animals spayed or neutered is crucial to controlling the companion-animal overpopulation crisis—just one unaltered female cat can lead to 370,000 feline descendants in only seven years!

  • PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2011 Russell Brand is a fan of felines and named his own cat Morrissey—after The Smiths’ frontman, who is a fellow vegetarian and cat lover.
  • Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder may play a conniving vampire on TV, but in real life, he has a huge heart for animals and lots of love for his three rescued cats. In fact, not liking animals would be a dating deal breaker for Ian. He told Cosmopolitan magazine, “I don’t care how hot a girl is—if she doesn’t like animals, it would be a major, major problem.”
  • Jenna Fischer, aka “Pam” from NBC’s The Office, is a champion for kitties. In addition to caring for her own rescued cat, she fosters homeless cats and volunteers for a cat rescue organization.
  • Singer Melissa Ferrick takes a bold stand in favor of adopting animals from shelters by posing with a rescued cat in a PETA ad with the tagline “Don’t Buy While Animals Die.” She asks others to be lifesavers by always spaying and neutering and by never buying from breeders and pet stores.
  • Christopher Walken, a cat guardian himself, shares his appreciation for cats and their emotions. Walken explains, “A tail is so expressive. On a cat you can tell if they’re annoyed. You can tell whether they are scared. They bush their tail. If I was an actor and I had to play scared in a movie all I’d have to do is bush my tail. I think that if actors had tails it would change everything.” Walken promotes the proper treatment of cats and even penned a foreword to a book on cat care.

I have always loved the furr people-I have seven feline bosses and two dogs-all are rescues. I especially love black cats and have 3-two tuxedos and two tabbies. What would life be without them? Empty and meaningless!

It is so heart warming to read your stories of such love and devotion that cats give to you. We run a Sanctuary for cats in Blackpool UK. We have twelve “boys and girls” rescued from a variety of nightmare situation all neutered and loved. One example Charley we called him as he comes from Charles St sat outside his flat door for his family who just left him and moved on. When we found him he was so hungry and dehydrated he eat and drank for an hour we gave him the name and a good home for life. Money to feed and buy worn and flea treatment is tight but we muddle through We also feed the Street Cats around who are hungry but seem to know where we put the plastic dry food at night. We lost our beautiful boy Lulu 18 years via cancer last week but his ashes fuel the yellow rose bush in the small Sanctuary Garden and we know his soul is at Rainbow Bridge awaiting us Home. They call me the Old Cat Priest but I do not mind as I have given a home to so many beautiful loving creatures who have the freedom of the house and garden for life God Bless all Cats Fr Anthony

I have four kitties. 3 are from my cousin’s cat and one was a stray that adopted us. They are all like little people with their own opinions and personalities. I love it when they sleep by me and purr or fall asleep on me and start dreaming. Life would not be complete without them.

James Franco is a cat guy, all his cats have been named after characters from books. He once told a reporter that on his black tie events u can always see some of their hair on his clothes.

A greeting from Scandinavia: I am a cat-lover, my present cat’s name is Trille, which is both a girl’s name in Danish, but also refers to what she does on the carpet: rolls around, and she is very talkative ! I love her to bits, she came to me from a rescue center, where I have volunteered since the ripe age of 16 – am now 51. She is also quite talkative, and have quite a language, both spoken and throaty. She sleeps in my arm at night, or uses my palm as pillow. Cats rule !

I have 4 cats, and although people say cats are not loving as are dogs, my cats look at me with such love and adoration, and want to be near me all the time. Two of them are in the house and the other two are mainly in the garden. They are so intelligent, each with his own personality, very strong willed and independent but nevertheless like so much to be close and patted a lot, seems to be never enough

‘If you have to be human, at least be humane’ I Love that!

I am also a cat ‘guardian’ (really it’s vice versa)
Being an Actor and producer I relate to many fictional characters,
hence my two rescues…Buffy (named after the Vampire slayer)
and Gabriel Van Helsing (after the monster hunter)
On the serious side of my business my Film production company was formed to educate and bring attention to the plight of abused animals.
A percentage of any profits will go to many charities including PETA etc. that I already support.

I have four cats. Two, Max and Phoenix, were rescued from a person who was homeless and couldnt care for them anymore. The other two, Angel and Archie, are strays that were found on the street. I love cats and these four keep me on my toes. Without them I would sleep til noon. I have to get up and feed them. I also feed a feral colony in my neighborhood. I am trying to get some of them in the colony spayed/neutered so they dont reproduce. It is so sad to see them scared and hungry longing for a furever home of their own. Spay/neuter your cat. We have too many cats on this planet and we need to curb the population explosion.

  • Shari says:

There are 10 cats who live in my house with my hubby and myself. They have all been rescues, either from shelters or from outside. Adding to the original 3 housecats (Sugar, Honey, & Reesie)of this group was a family of 7 cats (2 sisters Violet & Pansie and their kids Brady, Smudge, Pugsley, Sadie, & Molly) that had lived in my backyard. Of course ALL the cats are indoor only and have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and get their annual medical check-ups. With our own kids grown and out of the house, our cats help make our house a true home. Love them all!!

I loved reading that my favorite vampire Ian Somerhalder is a cat lover! My kitty is a rescued cat and her name is Lucy. Lucy is very sweet and likes to follow me around my home. I don’t have any kids but Lucy is my baby.
