PETA Germany Investigation Uncovers Turkey Torture

Written by Jennifer O'Connor | March 5, 2014

An in-depth investigation by our colleagues at PETA Germany has thrown open the curtain on the cruel process of “growing” turkeys. Turkey production has become so highly mechanized that the birds have become overbred hybrids who cannot naturally reproduce. Hens must repeatedly endure invasive and painful artificial insemination.

At industrial facilities called “parent farms,” hens are rounded up about once a week, are restrained, and have an insemination tube connected to a pressure hose inserted into their cloaca. The semen, which is regularly collected from the toms, is injected, and the hens are then taken back to the dark, stifling holding sheds. Those birds used as “parents” endure this process over and over again in production cycles of 26 weeks before being killed.

The inseminated eggs are taken to hatcheries, and then the newborn chicks are taken to fattening farms. Even though the natural lifespan for turkeys can be as long as 15 years, hens are shipped to slaughter when they are just 16 weeks old and toms when they are just 21 weeks old.

Turkeys are bred for excess weight and unnaturally fast growth. Leg problems, skeletal mutations, and cardiovascular problems result, and almost all factory-farmed turkeys are crippled. And although the turkeys are fed massive quantities of antibiotics, many succumb to diseases.

The suffering does not end on the farms, as the surviving turkeys are violently rounded up, kicked, thrown around, slammed to the ground, and stuffed into crowded trucks before being taken to slaughterhouses, where their broken bodies are hung on assembly lines and they are killed.

What You Can Do

Pick up delicious vegan turkey at your grocery store instead of eating these beautiful and interesting birds.

poor animals, animals should have the rights to do anything , and they should be free like us.
animals have a life too, and we also have a life, would you like it if anyone took ur freedom, life, and rights away?

  • Susanne says:

In-humane, savage, cruel, mean and barbaric treatment of any animal is inexcusable and despicable! Anyone with an ounce of conscience could not and would not commit such crime! This is pure sadistic and SICK! What is wrong with people!!!

  • michelle says:

end up with this abuse denounce these farms where cruelly mistreat animals are living beings feel .. justice and no more suffering for animals

  • Denise says:

I have known a turkey and took care of it when nobody else would. They are not stupid, as many people are told. Any animal that is taken away from its mother and not raised with her does not grow up real smart. Because the animal does not get the training from the mother. So they appear not to be very smart. A lot of animals have their unique instincts in place, but the rest of it comes from the mom or the social family that they are born into. This kind of abuse going on in factory farms has to be stopped, not condoned. Some of our greatest leaders in the world know that a nation will be judged by the way they treat their animals of all kinds and in all places. We must be their voices because we have put them in harms way for way too many years now. Stop the animal abuse and prosecute the workers participating in the torture of factory farm animals. Thank You!

  • Anne Grice says:

Absolutely abhorrent!! No justification for such level of cruelty especially in a developed country. You really are despicable people working in these turkey factories! Expose and condemn these vile subhumans who could cold bloodily do this to living beings that the feed on!

  • Susan Lanes says:

There was a time when people took care of their animals because they knew their lives depended on their wool, milk, eggs, labor, meat, etc., but now we are so removed from that symbiosis. We get food from the store, vending machines, and because it’s out of our sight we have become careless with how animals are treated…letting others house them in factories like machines working in our service until they break and are discarded.

  • Jo Ardell says:

Please Go Vegan, if you haven’t already, For The Animals. They are Suffering!

  • Robin Cornell says:

Factory farms want people to think of the turkeys as “things.” That way, people won’t feel guilty about eating them. Our job as vegans is to make sure people know differently. Turkeys have personalities and are social and inquisitive beings. I too believe everyone should be vegan.

    for these outrageous acts!

  • Jacqueline McKay says:

I AM UTTERLY DISGUSTED AT THE WAY THESE POOR TURKEYS ARE ABUSED AT THE HANDS OF VERY DEPRAVED AND CRUEL PEOPLE. I HOPE ONE DAY THEY WILL PAY FOR THE HORRIFYING AND DISGUSTING WAY THEY TREAT THESE INNOCENT BIRDS. NO LIVING CREATURE DESERVES TO BE TREATED SO INHUMANELY. THIS CRUELTY MUST STOP NOW!!

  • carol frayne says:

Its shocking abuse by disgustingly depraved and sick people. No one in their right mind would want to do this! Raping an animal or bird to make them pregnant is sick and there has to be something that can be done about these depraved and sick people who continue to do this unquestioningly in the name of feeding people. I for one do not ask them to do this on my behalf.

  • Marliese Bonk says:

There is no limit to man’s atrocities against animals and we are all guilty for standing idly by and supporting CAFOs in any form!

  • Debz Jones says:

GO VEGAN AND STOP THIS APPALLING CRUELTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is unbelievable!!! How cruel do people need to be???? Would they like to be treated like they treat turkeys??? Turkeys are created by God as other animals are. They all need to be treated with respect!!!! Just because animals aren’t human doesn’t give people the right to abuse them!!!! God will remember the abusers!!! I would hate to be them on judgement day!!!!

  • PRUDENCE WYETH BROOKS says:

EVEN A BURMESE PYTHON (A SNAKE) WHICH WAS RELEASED TO THE WILD IN ANOTHER INSTANCE OF THOUGHTLESS BEHAVIOR, DOES NOT GET THE KIND OF TREATMENT THAT THESE HARMLESS ANIMALS DO. ONLY VEGAN TURKEY FOR ME!! I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE EVERYWHERE TO HALT THE PURCHASE OF ANY TURKEY RAISED ON THESE MASSIVE FARMS . REFUSE TO OWN ANY PART OF THESE FARM CORPORATIONS. THEIR TURKEYS REMAIN SO FAR REMOVED FROM “NATURAL” THAT THEY ARE FRANKENSTEIN-LIKE ANYWAY. DO NOT FORGET THAT RATS NIP THESE POOR CRIPPLED CREATURES. DO YOU WANT TO NIBBLE WHERE RATS DO?

  • Erika says:

Yes, vegan turkey is quite delicious. That is terrible about those real turkeys. Why would anyone want to eat them when they can have tofurkey??

  • VICKI GINOLI says:

PLEASE STOP THIS CRUELTY – COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS IS INTIMATELY CONNECTED WITH GOODNESS OF CHARACTER; AND IT MAY BE CONFIDENTLY ASSERTED THAT HE WHO IS CRUEL TO ANIMALS CANNOT BE A GOOD MAN!

  • Giuliana Rinaldo says:

All these factory farms around the world, including in our own backyard in the USA disgust me with outrage. Can we and all the rescue groups start legally pressuring the United Nations. It is overwhelmingly sad, depressing, and frustrating to hear in what ways of how all these various animals suffer and how many number of animals all around the world suffer. I can’t tell you the countless petitions I have partaken, the various donations I give when I’m able to, and how much I pray for progressive, humane change to protect legally the welfare of all animals around the world (domestic, farm, and wild). There needs to be a time soon where all the evil, selfish people enslaving and torturing these animals needlessly will be held so accountable for what they do that they will never be able to get away with the cruelty ever again.
