Update: Caesars Lets Animal Abuser Conduct Business as Usual

Written by Michelle Kretzer | March 21, 2014

Update: Problems are mounting for big-cat exhibitor Dirk Arthur. A U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection report that was just made public shows that Arthur got a fresh round of citations for violations of the Animal Welfare Act. According to the report, he continued to house the cats in cages that deny them adequate space, failed to provide them with legally required access to an exercise area, and didn’t erect adequate safety barriers to protect the animals and the public. Despite these ongoing problems, Arthur is still scheduled to start his three-month stint at Caesars-owned Harrah’s Renothis month. While he continues to abuse big cats, animal advocates should continue to insist that Caesars Entertainment Group and its casinos cut ties with him. PETA and our Reno-area supporters plan to protest Arthur’s show at Harrah’s if the company isn’t willing to do the right thing.

The following was originally posted on March 6, 2014:

From declawing tigers to restricting animals’ movement, one of the acts hired by Caesars Entertainment Group has a history of violating the Animal Welfare Act—including numerous citations for confining tigers to metal cages outside with no protection from the sun on two days when temperatures reached up to 127 degrees. So PETA is letting Caesars know that the show must not go on.

Dirk Arthur presents the “Wild Magic” show at the Caesars-owned Harrah’s in Laughlin and Reno, Nevada.

Most recently, during an inspection at Harrah’s Laughlin, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) cited him for forcing two tigers and a lion to undergo painful declawing procedures in violation of a long-standing USDA policy, confining a snow leopard to a rusty and unsound enclosure, subjecting a bobcat to conditions that presented “a clear hazard” to the animal’s safety, failing to use adequate barriers to protect the cats and the public, and denying the animals the opportunity to exercise or even adequate space to make normal postural adjustments.

In addition to Arthur’s history of depriving cats of basic necessities, he also has a history of transferring exotic cats to and from other unscrupulous exhibitors.

Cruelty to animals is not entertainment.

Caesars should join the growing list of companies—including Simon Property Group, Inc., the largest real estate holding company in the U.S.—that have made a commitment to hiring entertainment acts that do not exploit exotic and endangered animals.

Please ask Caesars and Harrah’s management to end the partnership with Arthur and urge Caesars to commit to hiring only entertainment acts that do not exploit animals.

There’s no magic in cruelty to animals! There are so many good acts out there, why would a business continue its contract with Dick Arthur???? Caesars should join the growing list of responsible companies that do not hire acts that exploit exotic and endangered animals — or any animals.

IF I REALLY SAID WHAT I WAS THINKING MY CUSSING WOULD RING THE EARS OF THOSE UNGODLY PEOPLE, BUT AS I CAN NOT CUSS, AND IT WOULD NOT BOTHER THEM ANYWAY, MAY GOD HAVE THEM STAND BEFORE HIM ON JUDGEMENT DAY AND LET THEM SEE EVERYTHING THEY HAVE DONE AND FEEL EVERY PHYSICAL AND MENTAL PAIN THEY HAVE CAUSED. I DO NOT NOW WHY THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT JAILED FOR BREAKING THE LAW.

I hate the thought of any live creature being on exhibition or display just for money. The torture they have to endure to learn these tricks for humans to enjoy is horrific. Not to mention the stress they have to go through being taken away from their families. They love their families like our babies love being with us. Couldn’t we just write books with pictures of animals and stuffed images of what they look like for us to buy for our children and let them be at peace and live the way they were meant to….I hope Caesars and Harrah’s will realize they are supporting this horror for our innocent animals and will end their partnership with Arthur immediately… I to will pray for Arthur in the mean time….

Such an irresponsible individual should never be allowed to work with animals of any type. We call this what it is: abuse and neglect, and it’s being perpetrated upon endangered exotic cats, no less. I should think that no legitimate business would want be associated with Mr. Arthur. His cats are kept in the kind of circumstances that can cause safety issues for cats and humans alike, and that foster behavior and health problems for the cats. I would never take my children to see an event that treated their animals in this way, and it is my hope that a stand of solidarity against this individual by all of Las Vegas will cause a drastic change in the lifestyle of these magnificent cats.

This just makes me sick. I don’t understand why the USDA doesn’t follow through and stop this disgusting mess. Surely they have the authority – just giving the animal owner citations is a joke.

  • Carole Huens says:

Don’t give them your money. That is the only thing they understand. They are sub humans.

  • Mary says:

This is not human. In any sorts of way…I refuse to see these people as humans. They’ve thrown away their humanity. They bring shame and distrust to their own business. Simply stated.

  • Rae Sawyer says:

Why doesnt the animal welfare organisation step in and save these besutuful, unique amazing creatures who do not deserve to suffer such indescribable cruelty, all for the sake of making a huge profit at the expense of these animals physical, mental well being, which is deplorable, despicable, inhumane and barbaric. Pls stop these animals from experiencing such agony, torture, pain, and distress. It is so wrong, unacceptable. Pets pls do something to put an end to circus once and for all. Why should animsls be cruelly punished to force them to perform absurd, unnatural tricks to entertain unknowing families what they have to endure fir heir entertainment. It is a disgrace. Circus people have no heart, conscience, integrity, decency or respect for any animal. Pls help protect, save these incredibly special animals who should be free to live in their natural habitat without fear if humans using gem and abusing them.
