A heartwarming new video of the Animal Rahat (“rahat” means “relief” in Hindi) sanctuary in India shows formerly neglected and abused camels, water buffaloes, and other animals rolling in the dirt, floating in a pond, frolicking with friends, and joyfully engaging in other types of natural animal behavior. Many of the animals went to Animal Rahat after years of backbreaking work in the sugar trade, hauling Victoria or tonga carriages, or being forced to perform in cruel circuses or were rescued after suffering from illness, injury, or abandonment.
“Animals are sensitive individuals who want to run, play, rest, and enjoy one another’s company, just as we all do,” says Animal Rahat Chief Operating Officer Dr. Naresh Chandra Upreti. “Animal Rahat offers a safe haven and a new lease on life for animals who deserve happiness, autonomy, and respect after so much suffering.”
Animal Rahat is run by dedicated staff, including veterinarians, veterinary assistants, animal caretakers, community educators, and an education officer. In addition to providing formerly abused animals with a home and high-quality veterinary care, the group’s animal protection initiatives include spaying and neutering dogs and cats, rescuing displaced wild animals, and rehabilitating them with the help of state forest departments.
