As the U.S. Supreme Court considers the meat lobby’s case against California’s ban on selling meat from pork producers that don’t meet Proposition 12’s meager improvements in factory farm conditions, PETA supporters wearing pig masks will lie down inside taped outlines representing the size of the crates in which mother pigs are confined for most of their lives. As the meat industry resists Prop 12’s requirement that pigs who, under current industry standards, can’t turn around or ever take two steps be given a small consideration of more space, PETA’s display will encourage the court to reject the industry’s greed. The demonstration will also appeal to all Americans to take personal responsibility by choosing not to eat pigs, thereby rejecting intensive confinement entirely and not supporting their terrifying trips to the slaughterhouse and painful deaths.

When:    Tuesday, October 11, 9:30am

Where:    U.S. Supreme Court, 1 First St. N.E. (near the intersection with E. Capitol Street), Washington

“The meat industry is so greedy that it’s fighting California’s Prop 12 with all its might, trying to deny pigs an absurdly small amount of relief,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “We hope the Supreme Court justices will not rule against the pigs, but every human has the power to stop such cruelty by choosing vegan food, which is the only true way to prevent animals exploited for food from suffering.”

PETA notes that President Joe Biden has sided with the meat lobby—namely, the pork industry based in Iowa, a key electoral state—in opposing the voter-supported Prop 12, a move that is incurring criticism from Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and other members of Biden’s own party.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
