In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), PETA and PETA Latino are highlighting the top 10 Latinx-owned vegan restaurants nationwide—and The Cocinita Miami has secured a spot on the list.

A former food truck that recently became a brick-and-mortar restaurant, The Cocinita Miami offers Latin American specialties such as burritos, choripánes—that is, vegan sausage with chimichurri on a baguette—and tacos, including the vegan beef Cowly Taco and the Portobello Chimichurri Taco, both served with fresh guacamole (pictured above). Hungry yet?

“Whether you’re in the mood for a coconut plantain arepa, a dairy-free cachapa, or a delicious slice of cheesecake, The Cocinita Miami has a super-tasty vegan dish for you,” says PETA Latino Senior Manager Alicia Aguayo. “The restaurants on PETA Latino’s top 10 list put vegan spins on Latin American classics that are as taste bud–friendly as they are animal-friendly.”

PETA Latino—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that going vegan is a move for social justice, as slaughterhouse workers, who are disproportionally Latinx, are facing a practically unchecked spread of COVID-19, which originated in a meat market. Everyone who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year and combats speciesism, the archaic belief that other animals are inherently inferior to humans and that it’s acceptable to exploit them—and thanks to delicious vegan-friendly restaurants like The Cocinita Miami, making the switch is easier than ever.

Other honorees include Viva Vegeria in San Antonio, Mama’s International Tamales in Los Angeles, and Nuno’s Tacos & Vegmex Grill in Dallas.
