PETA Takes Aim at Hunters in Town for Annual Meeting

Indianapolis – The National Rifle Association’s (NRA) annual meeting at the Indiana Convention Center is underway, and to shame attendees, PETA has placed a billboard in the area showing a young man pointing a rifle at a bear above the words “Gotta Be 18 to Buy a Gun. Gotta Be a Real Man Not to Use It. Real Men Don’t Kill Animals.”
The ad is at 526 S. Pennsylvania St., facing north, half a mile from the Indiana Convention Center.
“Hunting breeds insensitivity to suffering, disturbs animal populations, damages ecosystems, and lets people labor under the delusion that blowing away fellow living, feeling beings is acceptable—when it’s actually despicable,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s billboard blasts NRA members with the message that gunning down unarmed individuals who are just minding their own business is a cruel, cowardly, half-cocked thing to do.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, which is the human-supremacist view that animals are nothing more than trophies or commodities. Hunters kill millions of animals every year and leave many others injured, allowing them to escape only to die slowly and painfully from blood loss or starvation. Orphans of parents killed by hunters are left vulnerable, too. Hunters have contributed to the extinction of species all over the world, including the Tasmanian tiger and the great auk.
