PETA sent the event organizers of Monday evening’s jazz memorial in Prince’s honor a letter yesterday asking them to cancel plans to release white doves during the memorial. After learning that birds released at similar events are often injured, succumb to starvation, or are killed by predators—something that Prince, an outspoken vegan and animal rights activist, would never support—the organizers quickly agreed to an animal-free tribute. In thanks, PETA is sending them a box of bird-shaped vegan chocolates.

“Although tears will surely be shed in New Orleans, no doves will cry or die in Prince’s honor,” says Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “Prince was royalty to PETA, and we are relieved that Monday’s memorial will be as kind to animals as he was.”

More information about Prince’s work to help animals is available on PETA’s blog.
