Below, please find a statement from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk in response to reports that the Canadian government has offered mink farmers an extra year to pay off millions of dollars in loans taken out as advances against this year’s profits:

So many Canadians are living in poverty and struggling to pay their bills, yet the government is subsidizing mink farmers. PETA is calling on officials to stop propping up cruel industries whose products nobody wants—including the skins of seals bashed to death on ice floes and the pelts of minks who slowly went insane inside tiny wire cages. This fur-coat industry welfare has got to stop.

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear.” For more information, please visit PETA.org.
